Triple Increase in Inferno Drainer Usage as Crypto Scams Escalate in 2024

As the cryptocurrency market experiences a bullish trend, the utilization of the infamous Inferno Drainer tool among decentralized applications (DApps) has tripled, signaling an intensification in efforts by scammers to exploit the digital asset space.

Data from the Web3 security firm Blockaid highlights a concerning trend: the number of DApps deploying the Inferno Drainer tool surged to 40,000 by the end of July 2024. This marks a significant increase in malicious activity within the crypto ecosystem. Oz Tamir, the lead of research and development at Blockaid, noted a stark rise in the deployment of malicious DApps, “At the beginning of the year, we saw about 800 new malicious DApps per week. Now, that number has tripled to 2,400 per week,” he stated.

Crypto Drainers

Crypto drainers, such as Inferno Drainer, are sophisticated phishing tools designed to compromise crypto wallets. These tools facilitate scams by deceiving users into signing token approvals, ultimately granting scammers access to steal funds. Despite the shutdown of a similar tool, Pink Drainer, in 2023, Inferno Drainer has not only resurfaced but has also gained traction among cybercriminals this year.

While Inferno Drainer appears complex, Tamir suggests its popularity is more about availability than uniqueness. “Scammers often choose their drainer based on what is available at the moment and what commission is taken by the drainer,” he explained. This opportunistic approach by scammers underscores the adaptive and dynamic nature of cyber threats in the crypto space.

The Correlation with Market Conditions

The increase in scam activities correlates with the recent bull market conditions, which have attracted more users and money into the ecosystem. “As more users and money are entering the ecosystem, attackers are increasingly motivated to invest in new, novel attacks,” Tamir added. This influx of new potential victims has provided fertile ground for scammers to deploy and refine their deceptive tactics.

Tamir also highlighted the vulnerability of new blockchain networks which tend to have less stringent security measures. The deployment of new chains has opened up new avenues for attackers looking to exploit these lesser-secured environments quickly.

Year Malicious DApps Weekly New Instances Stolen Funds ($)
2023 20,000 800 70 million
2024 40,000 2,400 Not specified

The ongoing trend of increased usage of crypto drainers like Inferno Drainer presents significant challenges for the security of the crypto market. It underscores the need for continued vigilance and enhanced security measures both for individual crypto users and the broader digital asset platforms. As the market grows, so does the need for sophisticated defenses against these evolving threats.

The surge in usage of tools like Inferno Drainer in 2024 is a stark reminder of the persistent and evolving threat of cyber scams in the cryptocurrency space. As the market continues to expand, the community must prioritize advancements in security technologies and collaborative efforts to safeguard against these malicious activities.
