Apple Reportedly Phasing Out USB-A in New Mac Mini

Apple is reportedly planning to remove USB-A ports from the upcoming Mac mini, according to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman.

The new Mac mini models will feature Apple’s M4 chip and will be equipped with five USB-C ports. Other connectivity options include an Ethernet port, an HDMI connector, and a headphone jack. However, the familiar USB-A ports will be absent, which may lead users to require adapters for older peripherals.

This update marks a significant change, as the Mac mini has not undergone a substantial redesign since 2010. The new versions, which will come with an internal power supply, are expected to begin shipping to warehouses in September for the standard model and October for the Pro model.

Apple has a “Glowtime” press event scheduled for September 9, where the iPhone 16 is expected to be announced. However, the new Mac mini lineup might be revealed later in the fall, potentially indicating separate announcements for different product categories.

In addition to the changes in the Mac mini, Gurman reports that Apple is working on a less expensive version of its Magic Keyboard, which is anticipated to launch by the middle of next year. This keyboard is expected to be a simplified version, designed for use with entry-level iPads or the new iPad Air models. This development comes after Apple introduced a new Magic Keyboard for the iPad Pro earlier this year.
