TikTok Introduces Group Chats and Custom Stickers in DMs

TikTok is expanding its platform by introducing group chats, a feature that allows users to engage in conversations with up to 32 people directly within the app. This new functionality, announced on Monday, August 12, enables users to share, watch, and discuss content all in one place, enhancing TikTok’s existing messaging capabilities.

How to Start a Group Chat on TikTok

Users can start group chats by selecting the “Chat” button at the top of their inbox and then choosing the “More options” menu. From there, users can pick the friends they want to include in the group and click “Start group chat.”

Additionally, group chats can be created by sharing a video with multiple friends, allowing for collective discussion. The process is simple: after selecting the video, tap the Share button, choose “Create group chat,” select the friends, and start the conversation.

Safety Measures for Younger Users

TikTok has implemented safety measures for younger users within these group chats. The feature is available only to users aged 16 and up, with specific restrictions for teens aged 16 and 17. For instance, teens can only join a group chat if at least one member follows them back, and they must manually approve any new members who join a group chat they have created.

The feature is not accessible to users aged 13 to 15, ensuring additional protection for younger audiences.

Custom Stickers in DMs

In conjunction with group chats, TikTok is rolling out custom stickers in direct messages (DMs). This feature, available to users aged 18 and older, allows for the creation and upload of personalized stickers, offering another way for users to visually engage with each other.
