Fox and Time Implement Blockchain Technology to Tackle Misinformation

Fox Corporation and Time, a prominent global media brand, have entered into a strategic partnership utilizing Fox’s Verify protocol to enhance content licensing and verification processes. This collaboration marks a significant step in leveraging blockchain technology to maintain the authenticity of journalism and counteract misinformation.

Objective of the Partnership

The primary aim of this collaboration is to safeguard the integrity of journalism by making the licensing and verification of content immutable. By integrating Fox’s Verify protocol, Time positions itself at the forefront of fact-based, trustworthy journalism.

Mark Howard, Time’s Chief Operating Officer, highlighted the importance of this partnership, stating: “Time is proud to join Fox’s Verify as an authenticated source of fact-based journalism at a time when access to trusted information is more important than ever.” Similarly, Melody Hildebrandt, Chief Technology Officer at Fox Corporation, expressed her enthusiasm for the collaboration: “In Time, we have found a partner that shares our AI-optimism as well as our commitment to protecting brand equity and authenticity while delivering our content in new and meaningful ways.”

Technical Aspects of Verify Protoco

The Verify protocol, launched on the Polygon proof-of-stake (PoS) network in January, employs cryptography to authenticate the history and origin of digital content. It creates a technical conduit between artificial intelligence (AI) platforms and media companies, ensuring the verification of over 300,000 pieces of content across Fox’s network.

Marc Boiron, CEO of Polygon Labs, commented on the collaboration: “Polygon Labs’ collaboration with Fox Corp on Verify exemplifies the positive impact of blockchain technology. Time, one of the world’s most respected media outlets, is an ideal first external publishing partner.” Following the success of the initial implementation, Fox announced plans to transition Verify from the Polygon PoS network to an independent zero-knowledge (ZK) blockchain using Polygon’s Chain Development Kit (CDK). This move, facilitated by Gelato—a Rollup-as-a-Service platform—aims to enhance the security and scalability of content verification.

Benefits of Transitioning to ZK Blockchain

The shift to a ZK blockchain offers several advantages:

  • Increased Security: By utilizing zero-knowledge proofs, the Verify protocol ensures that content verification is both secure and private.
  • Open-Sourced Technology: This transition allows for the open-sourcing of the verification process, encouraging developers to create projects that can authentically prove their content.
  • Potential for Exponential Growth: As explained by Boiron, the implementation of ZK technology positions Verify for significant expansion within the digital content verification space.
Benefit Description
Enhanced Content Authenticity Blockchain technology ensures the integrity and traceability of content.
Reduction in Misinformation Immutable records prevent the alteration of information, thus reducing the spread of fake news.
Increased Trust in Media By providing a verifiable source of information, blockchain helps restore trust in media outlets.

The partnership between Fox Corporation and Time using the Verify protocol represents a groundbreaking initiative in the fight against misinformation through the application of blockchain technology. This strategic collaboration not only enhances the authenticity of journalistic content but also sets a standard for other media companies to follow in the digital age.
